In traditional Chettinad homes, the valavu—a central courtyard—is more than just an architectural element; it is the soul of the house. Surrounded by rooms on all sides, the valavu serves both functional and cultural purposes. This open-to-sky space is a hallmark of climate-conscious design, playing a vital role in temperature regulation and natural lighting.
In the hot and humid climate of Karaikudi, the central courtyard acts as a natural cooling system. By capturing the sun’s path from sunrise to sunset, it facilitates the stack effect—as warm air rises and escapes through the top, cooler air is drawn in from lower levels through aligned front and back doors. This continuous airflow reduces indoor heat and humidity. Moisture-absorbing lime plasters further aid in maintaining comfort by minimizing internal dampness.
Additionally, the verandah encircling the courtyard is sheltered with sloping tiled roofs, providing shade and protection from heat. The courtyard itself is slightly sunken to collect rainwater runoff from the roofs. This collected water is traditionally used for drinking, domestic chores, and even for livestock.
